Vacation

First let me wish everyone a very belated Merry Christmas. Christmas was great. The children are happy so that makes me happy. D joined us for Christmas this year so Zaria was really excited (deep down, so was I).

Since I don't take any "real" time off during the summer (I work for the school department but I am management which means I work year round), I decided to take Christmas week off. So my vacation officially started yesterday. So I am planning to post everyday this week. Kinda like a chronicle of my vacation...

DAY ONE
I dropped Zaria off at daycare because I need to get my house back together from the holiday mess. SIGH!!! I returned home only to clean the kitchen and sort laundry and then I did something that I knew I shouldn't have done...I checked my blog. Once I saw Christina's chocolate chip cookies, I just had to make some. So, I did. Once I made the cookies, I decided that I should try to complete the gifts for Zaria's daycare family (mainly her provider and her oldest daughter AKA Grandma Brenda and Auntie Sandra). Notice no cleaning getting done. There's always tomorrow (hey wait...that's today...LOL). I ended the day by visiting my grandmother and two of her friends (Auntie Joni and Auntie Bev) who brought gifts for the little monsters. Thank you Aunties. We love you.

DAY TWO - Today
I dropped both of the children off today. Zaria to daycare and Juwan to his afterschool program that is open from 9 - 4 today and tomorrow. I have been very productive this morning. I have already washed 4 loads of clothes (this included some blankets) and folded them. Small steps to victory. I also organized the computer center which is why I am currently blogging...So, back to cleaning.

Happy Hooking.

An Evening Off

Can you believe I took some time off for myself? Well, it was more like tricked. My best friend called my house and told J to tell me to be ready at 8:30 with jeans and sneakers on. I thought about it and wondered if someone had pissed her off and we were going to beat them up. LOL. Yeah right? Us? We would never do such things. We are ladies!!!

So, I did as instructed and I would like to publicly say THANK YOU to Cece. She tricked me into going bowling with her and a few of her friends (soon to be in-laws). My little sister tagged along and we had a blast. I promised them that I would go out more often. We already have plans to go bowling next Monday and we're bringing Juwan and a few friends.

Thanks again Cece. Love you much...

Christmas Gift Update

So, last night, I finally finished my grandmother's shawl. I feel like it took forever but at least it is complete. I hope she likes it.

I also completed A's gift. This took longer than I expected it to. It was only hdc, why it took so long is beyond me.

December 20, 2008

Let It Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!!!

So we had our first snow storm in Boston yesterday and this morning I joined my family as we shovled out. ***Reminder, I am supposed to be crocheting...***

Here's a few shots...

Can you believe she sat in the car to warm up and then told me to turn the heat off because she was "too hot"...LOL She is precious.
Okay back to hooking.

Christmas is coming too fast...

Why is it that every year I find myself crocheting like a mad woman the week of Christmas? Nana's shawl is almost complete and yesterday (thank godness for snow days) I completed the majority of A's scarf (20 short rows left to go). While I was crocheting the scarf, my brother came in my room and said "did you make that hat?" (the one to go with A's scarf). Yes, I did. He made this face that screamed...I like that a lot...hint, hint. Guess I need to make him one now. I also have yet to purchase my mom a gift so I need to make something quick for her. She also has been complaining about not having a hat/scarf....

Oh yeah and then there are the Angels that need to be put together for the GODMOTHERS (all 4 of them).

I have a lot to complete....

Happy Hooking.

(I am sure there will be an update later today. Stay tuned.)

Happy Holidays

Okay, I admit I started Christmas shopping the day after Thanksgiving (no I was not one of those 3 am shoppers but I did go out). So how is it that I am not ready for Christmas??? I'm still working on the Half Moon Shawl for my Grandmother. I'm making something for He Makes Me Happy and I still need to pick up a gift for my mother, brother, uncle, and little cousin (she wants a ring).

Last weekend, I decided (because it was the last paycheck before the holiday) that I needed to get a Christmas Tree. Before heading out to get the tree, something told me to go check on the ornaments, lights, etc that should be in the basement. Well, when I went in the basement, there were no decorations at all. What the ****? I know I left a box of Christmas decorations down there. Oh well, being mad won't make them reappear, just go buy more stuff!!! So, onward and upward. On Sunday, we (including Zaria's father) picked up a tree. On Monday, I went out and purchased decorations for the tree. Picked the kids up and we decorated the tree that night. Isn't she a beauty???

While picking up the decorations, I grabbed some stockings and then wondered who is going to write on them...My handwriting is okay but I wanted the stockings to be really pretty. So, (new idea to keep in mind) I printed a t-shirt transfer with our names, cut the extra away, ironed the transfer onto the stockings (yes, it worked!), grabbed the glue, went over the names, shook the glitter on, let it sit for a few minutes, added some bling (because I didn't like the gold sequence things and here's the finished product. Cute huh?
It's starting to feel like Christmas now.
Here's a few pictures of the little ones. Someone please tell me why it is so difficult to get little people to stay still long enough to get a good picture?
Gotta
Love
Them!

Don't worry, there's a crochet update in the works...
Stay tuned and warm.
Happy Hooking.

Moving On and Holidays

This morning I woke up happy. Why? A few reasons...

1. Christmas gifts are coming along
2. My Christmas shopping list is almost complete
3. I woke up on time
4. I met someone who wants to see me happy and does everything to keep me that way. I can't say too much because people will start asking questions. I assure you all that he does indeed make me happy. Can't you see the smile???

Okay moving on...I have been crocheting a lot (it's actually taken some time away from my new someone).

No matter what I do, Zaria gets sick. So, the concerned mommy figures she needs more warmth during these cold winter months ahead so what to do??? That's right, make her a new winter set.

My first pair of mittens. And they were easy. Laura, I guess I will try some fingerless gloves.
Okay, wait, I forgot some pictures are on the other computer...I'll post them later. I also made her a scarf and started a hat (that she ripped out because she thought she was helping). Oh well, I will make her another hat soon.
The halfmoon shawl is just about complete, it would be finished but I ran out of yarn...Back to the store to buy more yarn...Remember be focused. You can only buy the yarn for this project and nothing else!!! Yes, I admit it. I am a yarn-holic. Everyone is addicted to something right???
How are Christmas projects going?
Happy Hooking...

Holiday Projects

Hello fellow bloggers...
I have been steadily working on Christmas gifts for family and friends (and some orders) and wanted to see what type of things people are gifting these days. This weekend, I need to crochet some items (10) to donate to my son's school. They have a Holly Fair every year. The gym is set up like Santa's Workshop (including elves) and the students come down to shop for gifts for their family members. Last year I made scarves. Oh yeah...there is usually an age group and gender assigned to each class for donations. This year, we have teen boys/girls so I am wondering...do I just make some fun colored hats? Feedback will be very appreciated.

Happy Hooking...

The Sweet Smell of Success

Over the weekend, I was a vendor in my first ever Craft Fair. That's right people...I sold my wears and cleared a little over $200. I have been crocheting for about 10 years now and I have never sold anything. Now I am motivated to crochet and sell my items (for a reasonable price). I had hats and scarves and the only things that sold were the hats. I am not sure why the scarves didn't sell (we do live in New England and it does get extremely cold). I am planning on putting together a document with pictures of the items that did not sell (including prices) and emailing it out to all of my email buddies. Who knows maybe I'll get a few more sales. I committed to having a table again next year. I'll work on display sets, decorations, and a mirror (definitely need a mirror) for next year.

Onto Christmas gifts...

Happy Hooking...

HISTORY

Good Day Fellow Bloggers...

I am so happy today. Last night as the announcement of the 44th president was being made, I cried. Why? It became "REAL" to me. Yes, I watched the debates. Yes, I listened to all of the reports, Yes, I voted (and took Zaria with me). BUT, I just knew there would be a repeat of the last election. Well, I'm glad there wasn't. I am glad that this country put aside the color of someone's skin and chose the person who could change the way things have been.

I sent a text message out to all of my friends saying, "Only God would've have known." God has ordered this man's steps and I trust that God will give him the strength, direction and protection that he will need.

I am also happy that I can tell my son that if he works hard and lives a good life, he too could one day be president. Yes, we could've said this before, but now he can see it and believe it.

I leave you all with another text that I received last week and a picture...

Update

First let me aplogize for my absence. I have been busy working (my real job and a part-time job) and crocheting of course...Here's the happenings of A Lil This, A Lil That.

Over the last two weeks, I have designed a few flyers, business cards, tickets, and other printables BUT the most important update is below.
INVASION OF THE DIVINE HATS...
Some of you may remember last winter I fell in love with the Divine Hat. Well, after finding the pattern online (http://www.rheatheylia.com/index.php?page=patterns&id=0), (someone please explain how to create a hyperlink with just the name of the pattern) I have made a few for the Craft Fair.

Of course, I am supposed to make scarves but I've only made one so far...

OLD NEWS...
In August, my best friend had her engagement party. (Of course I became the party planner.) Her colors (for the party) were green and white (her last name and his). I wanted to wear these adorable sandals that I purchased but did not have a thing to match. So...I went shopping. Found the perfect outfit and accessories but needed a purse. Perfect, I'll make one. The Fat Bottom Bag it was...
Now you know I can't sew so I had Ms. Brenda do the lining for me. I LOVE THIS BAG!!!
CHRISTMAS IS A COMING...
In the midst of creating things for the Craft Fair, I remembered that I needed to make my grandmother a shawl for Christmas. So I started the Halfmoon Shawl from Lion Brand. Here's the progress so far...
BIRTHDAY...
J turned 10 on October 8th. I should have thrown him a big party but he was happy with the party he had. Here he is with his HSM cake.
ACCOMPLISHMENT...
Last but not least, my grandmother gifted me a plant and it is growing wonderfully. This is a major accomplishment for me. For those who don't know, I have killed everything green in my touch. Isn't it beautiful???
Keep on hooking...

Recommendation

Hello Fellow Bloggers...
Last night (while I was suppose to be crocheting) I watched a new movie that I had been bugging my friend to get for me. Well, he brought it to me before I left for my trip and I thought for sure I would bring it with me. Too bad I left the house and forgot the movie. ANYWAY... If you haven't seen A Family that Prays (Tyler Perry's new movie). I highly recommend it. I will be adding it to my list of favorites. Mr. Perry, you are moving on up. Kudos!!!

Now that I recommend something, I need your help. Remember the giant granny square poncho from the last post, I need to work some decrease rows around the neckline (trying to tighten it a bit). I will take all recommendations for this task.

Hook with you later...

Quick Update

Hey Fellow Bloggers...

Real quick. I traveled to Dover, Delaware this weekend for the 1st District YPD Meeting (AME Church). So, of course I planned on bringing my hooks and yarn problem was, I didn't actually pack until 3 am Friday morning (leaving at 4:45). So what is a girl to do? You got it. Grab enough yarn to complete the current work in progress. So I did. I was working on a granny square poncho (was suppose to be completed before the trip so the director and I could wear them while there). Green and white yarn in bag, hooks in bag. Off we go. Here's the completed poncho.

I know, a little big. I told her that I would work some decrease rows around the top so it would be a little tighter. What do you think???

The plus to this project is that people actually loved it. Someone said, "Oh girl, way to bring crochet back." I received a few orders so I will be crochet green and white ponchos for the rest of the week. Of course, I am still working on hats and scarves.

Quick Update

Hey Fellow Bloggers...

I have been crocheting like a mad lady (again). This time, I am taking pictures of everything. I promise to post again later this evening BUT while I have your attention, let me share this cute sweater and introduce my godson at the same time. Some of you will remeber the duckie afghan design that came and quickly became a blue ripple. While, I made this sweater for him also. Someone remind me to take a pic of the blanket...
Cute kid, huh???

Craft Update

A quick update on my crafting...

Over the weekend, I made my second diaper cake. Here's some pictures. The happy couple (not smiling) is Nick and Ashley. Congratulations to you both. Enjoy Ms. Ariana.

I have also been working on some hat and scarf sets for the Holiday Craft Fair. I will post some pictures this evening. I am making some Divine Hats and some Urban Newsboy hats also. For scarves, I am making some easy shell stitch scarves and the one skein scarf from Stitch N Bitch. I wanted to make a few shawls and one personalized afghan (for display) so that people will place orders for them. This is my first fair so I will see how it goes.

On another note, I was recently told that a kid that I used to babysit had a huge crush on me and that he hated my first boyfriend because of his crush. Wouldn't you know I saw this kid over the weekend. He is a cutie and I hope some very deserving young lady will be lucky to snatch him up.

Inspiration

Good Day Fellow Bloggers...
All week I have been trying to figure out how to let two people know that they inspire me to continue crocheting. These two ladies are always working on something and I am always amazed at how fast they both complete their projects. So, how does one show her graditude???

A public acknowledgement of course. So to:

New Pics

Hello Fellow Bloggers.
Just wanted to quickly share a couple of new pictures of the kiddies. Yes, I know they are growing up so fast.

Juwan and Zaria. Sometimes they love each other so much. This was one of those times and luckily, I caught it on camera...Juwan is now in the 4th grade and he is into skateboarding, mohawks. and wrestling...Zaria is becoming such a girly girl. I LOVE IT!!!

This is Zaria...Age 2 1/2 going on 21...LOL

This pose was encouraged by her 17 year old auntie (it figures, right???).

September 11th

Today marks the anniversary of the horrible attacks on America. Like many others, this is the only tragedy that I am old enough to remember vividly. I remember exactly where I was, what I was doing, and the feelings of those around me. Last year at this time, I was sitting in English 101 at UMass Boston and the writing prompt for the day was SEPTEMBER 11th. The professor simply asked that we "just write". No directions were given we were free to write whatever we felt. Today I am repeating that assignment but this time, it feels different. Today I sit in my office on the top floor of one of the largest high schools in the city of Boston. Outside my window the band is playing music that for some reason seems sad. At 9:03, the school will have a moment of silence and then back to business as usual. Although today is a sad day for the world, today marks a new beginning for my brother and another happy birthday for my aunt. While everyone remembers the victims, please also remember the ones who are still here with you.

PEACE and BLESSINGS to all.

Anniversary

Hello fellow bloggers...It's been a while since I last wrote and I am feeling horrible about that. I apologize. I have been wanting to write for at least a week but life always seems to get in the way. This entry won't be as lengthy as I had first imagined because I am doing it while at work. So tonight, when I get the little ones off to bed, I promise to write and to post some photos (another reason I haven't blogged in a while).

Here's the quick update:

1. I have been crocheting like a mad lady. I completed a few things for myself, started a few items for the craft fair (more later) and started some Christmas crafts.

2. The little ones are doing great. Juwan started forth grade and Zaria is growing like a weed. (New pics tonight).

3. Like last Fall, I have returned to my life on a budget. I am hoping I stay on track next Summer (that seems to be when I fall off).

4. WORK has changed for the better.

5. HIM...what is there to say. I am still madly in love with HIM and I am just now starting to admit to myself that there will never be another HIM for me. IF you are reading this, I LOVE YOU more than I ever that I would.

That's it for now. Tune in tonight or tomorrow for the full update.

Crochet Update

Crocheting is my passion!!! Just in case you didn't know yet. Last weekend I thought I was going to crochet my life away, but I didn't. Actually, I didn't work on anything. Of course, I had more thoughts of projects I should start...but they were just thoughts. So, here's a quick update of what's on my hooks. Yes, that's right, I am working on more than one project. I always wondered how people did this and now I will find out.

1. My Light 'N Lively Tank is still coming along. I think I need to purchase more yarn to complete it.

2. My Godson's (arriving sometime in August) blankie. I know I said it would be cute to do something with duckies and water but I don't think his mommy will use it so instead a baby blue ripple was started. I have made ripples before but this time I am making a ribbed ripple. I know big change...all you do is work in the back row instead...

3. Squares for Lesa.

That's it for my crochet projects but I think that is good for right now.

Even though today is Wednesday, here's my plans for the weekend...

Thursday (vacation day from work)
Do my errands
Clean house
Prep for the 4th (includes packing the arts and crafts, making potato salad and baked beans)

Friday (4th of July)
Familly cookout at Grandma's

Saturday
Hanging out with Juwan (maybe we will go to the movies again). We saw Kungfu Panda last weekend and it was pretty good. I am still in awe of how wonderfully animated the fight scences were.
CROCHETING!!!

Sunday
Church
CROCHETING!!!

Happy 4th of July to all.

Weekend Plans...

Okay, so I just read one of the many blogs that I frequent (Lesalicious) and decided that I will spend much of the weekend working on my tank and some 6 inch squares for Lesa's little girl. Lesa I am so sorry that you and your little one are going through so much. I will make some squares and get them in the mail to you ASAP. I will also be sending up some prayers for you and your family. Stay strong.

Crochet World...

Good Day All.

It's been a little while since I last wrote so here it goes.
Light 'N Lively Tank: It's been a process but it is coming together nicely. Last week I had to frog a bit of it. Last night I worked on it for about two hours (with the interruptions of the little ones). So here's a picture of what it looked like when I frogged it last week.

So far...so good. I like it. :)

Here's what it looks like now (2 shots)...

You can see the progress and it's starting to flow nicely. I don't necessarily like the fact that I can see the increases but I still like the pattern. I want to wear this for the 4th of July so I can show off my crochet skills. :) With that said, back to work again tonight....
As for the baby blanket...I haven't given it much thought at all. Laura had a great suggestion that was very similar to my thoughts (rubber ducky squares). See previous comment section to see what she said. The only thing stopping me is the fact that I can't find a pattern to work from for the duck. :( I am not giving up just yet. I work on something this week. If anyone knows where I can find a pattern (for a simple duck - cross stitch), please let me know.
Some non-crochet news...
I tried this http://craftychristina.blogspot.com/2008/04/empanadas.html on Tuesday night (for the Celtics game). Which reminds me...GO CELTICS!!! I am sure my grandfather would have been proud. Anyway, Christina, the empanadas were great but I think I was missing something. My flavor was a little bland or maybe it was the ground turkey... Not to worry, I am trying them again this weekend.
Talk to you all soon...

Crochet Survey

A while ago, Lesa had a survey on her blog and I meant to post my responses here. So, here it goes...

1) What crochet hook size do you find yourself working with the most without even thinking about it you find yourself picking up the most?
H - hook

2) What is your favorite thing to crochet the most?
Right now, I love to make afghans from charts (thanks to CrochetKim)

3) What would you like to crochet that you never crochet before?
Something that I can wear - a sweater, tank, cardigan, wrap, shawl; you name it, I want to make it LOL

4) Do you think you will pass down your love of crocheting down to your kids/nieces or sisters?
I hope so. I have a few girls who have tried it but haven’t stuck with it.

5) What is the craziest thing you ever heard someone say to you about you crocheting?
I thought old people did that. OR My mother used to do that when I was little (the majority of these people are way older than I am).

Today

Hello Fellow Bloggers...
Today is my 30th birthday. Yeah me. I never thought I would be excited about turning 30 but I am. This past weekend was busy. My bestfriend had a graduation party on Saturday, my Aunt had a small cookout on Sunday for her birthday and yesterday, my grandmother came over to hang pictures (now my apartment looks like a home).

As for the crochet front...
I purchased yarn to make that tank top that I wanted last summer but didn't think I could make it. So far so good. Here's the link http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/60485.html?noImages=
It is working out nicely, if I say so myself. The only problem is it will definitly need to have a built in bra and it will need to be lined. I don't sew so, I'll have to ask my daughter's daycare provider (Ms. Brenda). I will a picture of the WIP this evening. Also, I want to make the Sweet Sweater http://crochetme.com/sweet. It is supposed to be really easy. First I need to have my measurements taken. I will try to get this done this week (thanks Ms. Brenda). Then, my godchild will need a blanket when he arrives (early August). No need to make him a sweater set because he will live in onesies and pampers for a while. Now if I could just decide on the pattern for his blanket. Duckies or Teddy Bears??? I know I want the blanket to be blue, white, and yellow. So maybe I will do both duckies and teddy bears. I'll keep you all posted.

Peace and blessings.

Update...

Good Day fellow bloggers.

First let me apologize for the long absence. While I haven't posted in a while, I have been crocheting. This will be a short post because I am at work. So, here we go.

This past weekend I attended a friend's baby shower. I've only been waiting for her to have a baby for nearly three years. So, of course, when I found out she was expecting, I started crocheting (not really but you know what I mean -- the thought was there). As soon as I found out the sex of the baby and theme of the room, I started my project. If you haven't heard yet, I am obsessed with cross stitch crocheting projects right now (see personalized afghans post). So, sailboats is the theme of the nursery. Here's the finished project.

Isn't it cute. I created a pattern using Excel and then worked the pattern square by square. A few whipstitches later...an adorable afghan for my good friend.

I have a few other projects on my hook, but the pictures are on my home computer. I will post again later.

Thanks Google for password assistance.

Peace and blessings.

This Weekend

Okay. I know I fell off the crochet train a few weeks ago and this weekend, I plan on jumping back on board. All week I have contemplated what project to work on (I have so many due) so here's the plan. Let's pray it works this way...

Tonight - Movie night with the kids. Because money is tight, I am making burgers, fries, and slushies (Juwan's favorite). Of course there will be popcorn. What movie you ask??? Bee Movie. After I watch the movie with the kids, it's time to crochet some quick squares for a little girl blankie. This blankie will complete the order for a baby set (hat, sweater, and booties already completed).

Tomorrow - It's supposed to be a wash so I plan on working on more newsboy hats, finishing up a blanket that I started a while ago, and working on my poncho.

I have already decided that I will need new sweater (cardigans) for next fall/winter so I guess I can start on those too. I can at least look at some patterns and wish...

I'll update you all as things are completed.

Craft

Hello...Hello.

Just want to share a couple of things with my online friends.

1. Over the weekend, one of the little cousins had a babyshower and you all know I haven't had much time to crochet. So, I made a diaper cake (my first). These things seem to be the new big thing at showers so I had to try it. I even made the washcloth lollipops (used tulle circles instead of cellophane and lollipop sticks). See for yourself.

Cute huh???

2. Just in case you missed it before...I LOVE him. We have spent so much time together (with the kids) and things just couldn't be better. RIGHT? Wrong. Even when a girl thinks things are going great, he starts saying things that makes her wonder if she is wasting her time. Does he want to be apart of her life? He says yes, but then starts talking about how she will always be his homegirl. WTF...Homegirl??? I thought we were working on something else. Maybe I was wrong. I still LOVE HIM, but I think I may have to walk away again...

Thanks for listening to me rant and rave but I had to get it out.

Write later. Here's a few new pictures of Zaria. She always makes me smile.

MIA

Hello All...
I know I have been MIA for a little while now so let me give a quick update.

1. I am still a crochet maniac.
Once a mastered that Newsboy Cap pattern, I was on a roll. I have sold about 20 hats (I still owe a few to some people).

I started a poncho for me. Yes, that is right, something for me. The problem is everytime I look at the yarn I chose, I think of fall, which would be fine if it wasn't winter... I figure I will complete it and save it to next fall. Do you think poncho will go out of style by then??? I sure hope not.

I also purchased some yarn to make a forest green sweater for myself. I chose the side to side cowl neck sweater pattern from Lion Brand. I've had it for awhile just haven't started it.

2. The craft room...
Well, the craft room never happened. It became a very organized storage space. I guess that is not so bad, but what about my craft space!!! I guess I will have to resort to the couch and bed to work on my projects. But, at least my yarn, candy making, and baking supplies have a home now, that doesn't clutter up my apartment.

3. HIM
I am sure you all remember HIM. Well, I am not exactly sure what is going on between us. We both know that we want to be together (we've talked about marriage) but he is not where he needs to be in his life. I totally respect a man who can admit to this. He wants the whole package and he knows that in order to do that he needs to have his stuff together. God I LOVE this man. So, keep us in your prayers. Who knows maybe this time next year we'll be talking about crocheting some wedding things (maybe the favors)...

Yarn Stash Increase

I am excited so please let me share. We have a place called the recycle center, here in Boston and everything there (just about everything) is FREE. So imagine my surprise when I received a message from the director saying, FREE chenille yarn (take as much as you can carry). You know I was there. I just returned and the yarn wasn't exactly what I thought it would be but it was FREE. I will post pictures of the new stash (as soon as I get home and take the picture). Already have a bunch of ideas brewing. There is one downfall. I will need to make balls in order to carry the yarn around in my project bag. :( That will take some time, but I will get to it.

Craft Room

I said I would post pictures of the soon to be craftroom so, here they are. Warning: the space is messy and a little junky right now. Planning on doing some work in there this coming weekend. I am starting off by organizing and tossing.
